I personally like Mag-2-Ray because it is sick as motherfuck. I have it on an Assault Rifle Ultra. I also keep a special ARU you can get named Thunder, which comes with M2Zap preinstalled. -

I definitely think it is worth it to get to the later phases of the game because there are some sick quests, weapons and mods later. Maybe play on easy till you get back to your current point in the quest to hurry it along.
