AI winter never ended, we just got GPUs and datasets that make this shitty black folk art mode of ML economically feasible for a while. Go read a "state of the art" CNN paper, most of them are like "uhhh, we did some stuff and it worked super well in validation (trust us!) so yeah, publication please" and even the best ones basically boil down to "we did some stuff and maybe this is why it worked well in validation but we still don't actually know anything more than when we started".

If "normal people" wanting to use something means never editing a text file, never opening a terminal, and never building from source then traditional linux systems are not for "normal people". Some distros are fairly successful in trying to paint over this but I'm pretty skeptical of the value in trying to ape the dominant proprietary paradigm. The text based shell is not some vestigial feature that's meant to be hidden behind layers of skeuomorphic menus, it has both philosophical and practical design advantages. You might think no mere mortal could ever learn how to use it but is it really all that more complex than memorizing contemporary (and wildly inconsistent) iconography or keyboard shortcuts? I'd argue it's much simpler, although there are certainly discoverability issues. As long as people learn to use WIMP descended interface families the CLI is always going to look either incomprehensible or like a paradigm shift, but the reality is that it's little more than a cultural bias.The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -

Very dubious statement there. Yes, the browser security model is heavily tested and there's a strong quality assurance pipeline in place for the major JS engines but the reason for this being the case is that the browser is pretty much the only place where there's even an attempt to take arbitrary turing complete code from an untrusted source and execute it "securely". That's like the hugest attack vector any has ever dreamed of, so for all the heroic effort poured into secure JS execution it's only necessitated by software that's a huge soft target in the first place.

Actually I stopped the first one at the load event but it continued loading videos in sequence, it spiked one core up to 100% for like 15 seconds and audio I had going in another browser tab skipped slightly in the process of loading a 6 paragraph news article. Imagine trying to download that shit on a spotty 3G connection with a phone that's 2-3 years old (that's a huge set of users). That's fucking criminal, and allowing users to opt out of javascript puts a huge dent in it. -

Like, the only major software available for Linux that is relevant to me is vlc and Kodi.
Rhythmbox fucking sucks, there isn't any decent video editing or music production software (lmms feels really cheap) and the UI is still shit.

At the moment AMD/ATI is doing great things in terms of open specifications and driver support for lunix, nvidia is still lagging behind but is improving slowly.
