First Thing: Cheney says Republicans must choose between Trump and truth
    Nicola Slawson

The fallout from the Capitol attack continues as the first anniversary on Thursday approaches. Yesterday, a Republican member of the House committee investigating the events of 6 January 2021 had a stark warning for her party – they must choose between Trump and truth.

“Our party has to choose,” Liz Cheney told CBS’s Face the Nation. “We can either be loyal to Donald Trump or we can be loyal to the constitution, but we cannot be both.”

Trump supporters attacked Congress in an attempt to stop certification of his defeat by Joe Biden, which Trump maintains without evidence was the result of electoral fraud. Five people died after a riot in which a mob roamed the Capitol, searching for lawmakers to capture.

On Sunday, Cheney and Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, the committee chair, again discussed the possibility of a criminal referral for Trump over his failure to attempt to stop the riot or for his obstruction of the investigation.

What else did Cheney say? She told ABC’s This Week there were “potential criminal statutes at issue here, but I think that there’s absolutely no question that it was a dereliction of duty”.

What did Thompson say? The Democrat told NBC’s Meet the Press the committee was examining whether it could issue subpoenas to members of Congress.

US could be under rightwing dictator by 2030, Canadian professor warns

The US could be under a rightwing dictatorship by 2030, a Canadian political science professor has warned, urging his country to protect itself against the “collapse of American democracy”.

“We mustn’t dismiss these possibilities just because they seem ludicrous or too horrible to imagine,” Thomas Homer-Dixon, the founding director of the Cascade Institute at Royal Roads University in British Columbia, wrote in the Globe and Mail.

“In 2014, the suggestion that Donald Trump would become president would also have struck nearly everyone as absurd. But today we live in a world where the absurd regularly becomes real and the horrible commonplace.”

Homer-Dixon’s message was blunt: “By 2025, American democracy could collapse, causing extreme domestic political instability, including widespread civil violence. By 2030, if not sooner, the country could be governed by a rightwing dictatorship.”

How does he think it will happen? The author cited eventualities centered on a Trump return to the White House in 2024, possibly including Republican-held state legislatures refusing to accept a Democratic win.

Meanwhile, key Donald Trump loyalists Steve Bannon and Michael Flynn are at the forefront of a drive to expand Trumpist influence at the local level of US politics.

Liz Cheney says Trump is unfit for office and 'clearly can never be anywhere near the Oval Office ever again'
    ydzhanova@businessinsider.com (Yelena Dzhanova)

Republican Rep. Liz Cheney on Sunday said Donald Trump should never be in office again.

Cheney said his inaction during the January 6 Capitol riot last year was unacceptable.

She said he had the power to put an end to it but did not despite repeated pleas to do so from his allies.

Rep. Liz Cheney scorched former President Donald Trump on Sunday, saying he has proven that he cannot be "anywhere near the Oval Office ever again."

In an interview on ABC's "This Week," Cheney, a Republican representative from Wyoming, said Trump had the power to put an end to the Capitol riot on January 6 but did not despite repeated pleas to do so from his allies and family members.

"I think it's also important for the American people to understand how dangerous Donald Trump was," Cheney said in the interview. "We know as he was sitting there in the dining room next to the Oval Office, members of his staff were pleading with him to go on television to tell people to stop. We know Leader McCarthy was pleading with him to do that. We know members of his family. We know his daughter — we have firsthand testimony — that his daughter Ivanka went in at least twice to ask him to please stop this violence."

Cheney is part of the House select committee charged with investigating the January 6 insurrection.

"Any man who would not do so, any man who would provoke a violent assault on the Capitol to stop the counting of electoral votes, any man who would watch television as police officers were being beaten, as his supporters were invading the Capitol of the United States, is clearly unfit for future office, clearly can never be anywhere near the Oval Office ever again," Cheney continued.

Rioters were emboldened by Trump's calls to protest the results of the 2020 election, despite Democrat Joe Biden's victory. While members of Congress were meeting inside the Capitol to certify the results and verify Biden's presidency, Trump supporters attempted a coup and stormed the Capitol.

The January 6 Select Committee, made up of a group of Republican and Democratic representatives, has been issuing subpoenas to collect documentation and testimony in its investigation of the Capitol riot.

So far, at least 727 people have been charged in relation to the riot.

    CBS News
Gen. Steve Anderson on January 6 and the "domestic cancer" threatening American democracy
    Brig. Gen. Steve Anderson (Retired)

Opinion this morning comes from retired U.S. Army General Steven Anderson:

Forty-three years ago, I swore an oath to protect the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Back then, who could have imagined the domestic attack on our democracy a year ago this week?

I've become increasingly concerned that our military has become politicized and infected by the acrimony that plagues our society today.

    Just consider this:

    At least 10% of the January 6th insurrectionists charged with crimes served in the military;

    Over 100 retired senior service leaders signed an open letter supporting Trump's "Big Lie" about the 2020 election;

Convicted felon retired Lieutenant General Michael Flynn advocated military action to support this claim; and

The Republican Party spent the last year downplaying the insurrection and obstructing investigations.

All this nonsense may confuse our troops on the difference between allegiance to a leader and allegiance to our Constitution. Such confusion could set conditions for another coup attempt, a thought that chills me to the bone.

    So, what should we do?

First, all insurrectionists must be held accountable, to include the politicians that supported the Capitol assault.

We need to educate our service members on the Constitution, and the integrity and legitimacy of our election system.

The Tiny Dots in This Image Aren't Stars or Galaxies. They're Black Holes
    Michelle Starr

The image above may look like a fairly normal picture of the night sky, but what you're looking at is a lot more special than just glittering stars. Each of those white dots is an active supermassive black hole.

The Tiny Dots in This Image Aren't Stars or Galaxies. They're Black Holes

    https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/the-tiny-dots-in-this-image-aren-t-stars-or-galaxies-they-re-black-holes/ar-AASmbof?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=U531

And each of those black holes is devouring material at the heart of a galaxy millions of light-years away – that's how they could be pinpointed at all.

Totaling 25,000 such dots, astronomers created the most detailed map to date of black holes at low radio frequencies in early 2021, an achievement that took years and a Europe-sized radio telescope to compile.

"This is the result of many years of work on incredibly difficult data," explained astronomer Francesco de Gasperin of the University of Hamburg in Germany. "We had to invent new methods to convert the radio signals into images of the sky."

When they're just hanging out not doing much, black holes don't give off any detectable radiation, making them much harder to find. When a black hole is actively accreting material – spooling it in from a disc of dust and gas that circles it much as water circles a drain – the intense forces involved generate radiation across multiple wavelengths that we can detect across the vastness of space.

What makes the above image so special is that it covers the ultra-low radio wavelengths, as detected by the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) in Europe. This interferometric network consists of around 20,000 radio antennas, distributed throughout 52 locations across Europe.

Currently, LOFAR is the only radio telescope network capable of deep, high-resolution imaging at frequencies below 100 megahertz, offering a view of the sky like no other. This data release, covering four percent of the Northern sky, was the first for the network's ambitious plan to image the entire Northern sky in ultra-low-frequencies, the LOFAR LBA Sky Survey (LoLSS).

Because it's based on Earth, LOFAR does have a significant hurdle to overcome that doesn't afflict space-based telescopes: the ionosphere. This is particularly problematic for ultra-low-frequency radio waves, which can be reflected back into space. At frequencies below 5 megahertz, the ionosphere is opaque for this reason.

The frequencies that do penetrate the ionosphere can vary according to atmospheric conditions. To overcome this problem, the team used supercomputers running algorithms to correct for ionospheric interference every four seconds. Over the 256 hours that LOFAR stared at the sky, that's a lot of corrections.

This is what has given us such a clear view of the ultra-low-frequency sky.

"After many years of software development, it is so wonderful to see that this has now really worked out," said astronomer Huub Röttgering of Leiden Observatory in the Netherlands.

Having to correct for the ionosphere has another benefit, too: It will allow astronomers to use LoLSS data to study the ionosphere itself. Ionospheric traveling waves, scintillations, and the relationship of the ionosphere with solar cycles could be characterized in much greater detail with the LoLSS. This will allow scientists to better constrain ionospheric models.

And the survey will provide new data on all sorts of astronomical objects and phenomena, as well as possibly undiscovered or unexplored objects in the region below 50 megahertz.

"The final release of the survey will facilitate advances across a range of astronomical research areas," the researchers wrote in their paper.

"[This] will allow for the study of more than 1 million low-frequency radio spectra, providing unique insights on physical models for galaxies, active nuclei, galaxy clusters, and other fields of research. This experiment represents a unique attempt to explore the ultra-low frequency sky at a high angular resolution and depth."

US Coronavirus: One dangerous way the Omicron surge is different than previous surges in the US
    By Christina Maxouris, CNN

The US kicked off 2022 amid a massive Covid-19 case spike -- driven by the highly contagious Omicron variant -- that some experts warn will be different than any other time in the pandemic.

"What we have to understand is that our health system is at a very different place than we were in previous surges," professor of emergency medicine Dr. Esther Choo told CNN on Saturday. "We have extremely high numbers of just lost health care workers, we've lost at least 20% of our health care workforce, probably more."

"This strain is so infectious," Choo added, "that I think all of us know many, many colleagues who are currently infected or have symptoms and are under quarantine."

The high number of health care staff out with the virus will also have an impact on Americans' doctors appointments and could make for dangerous circumstances when people are hospitalized with Covid-19, Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of Baylor University's National School of Tropical Medicine, said Friday.

"That's a different type of one-two punch: people going into the hospitals ... and all of the health care workers are out of the workforce," he told CNN.

But the latest variant isn't just shrinking health care staff numbers. As the virus spreads like wildfire across American communities, staffing problems are already altering parts of daily life.

Plagued with staffing issues, New York City's Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced last week several subway lines were suspended.

In Ohio, the mayor of Cincinnati declared a state of emergency due to staffing shortages in the city's fire department following a rise in Covid-19 infections, saying in the declaration that if the problem goes unaddressed, it would "substantially undermine" first responders' readiness levels.

And in the middle of a busy holiday season, thousands of flights have been canceled or delayed as staff and crew call out sick.

"We're seeing a surge in patients again, unprecedented in this pandemic," Dr. James Phillips, chief of disaster medicine at George Washington University Hospital, warned on Saturday. "What's coming for the rest of the country could be very serious and they need to be prepared."

Vast majority of patients still the unvaccinated, expert says
health care workers on the front lines of the pandemic say that unvaccinated Americans continue to drive Covid-19 hospitalizations in the latest surge, much like the summer surge, when the Delta variant was ravaging parts of the country.

Despite a year of calls from public health experts to get vaccinated -- and now boosted -- only about 62% of the US population is fully vaccinated, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

And about 33.4% of those who are fully vaccinated have received their booster doses, the data shows.

"If you're unvaccinated, that's the group still at highest risk," Dr. William Schaffner, a professor at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, told CNN Saturday. "The adults that are being admitted to my institution, the vast majority continue to be unvaccinated."

Dr. Catherine O'Neal, the chief medical officer at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, said their facility has seen hospital admissions and emergency department visits triple in the past week.

"What we're seeing is that... our vaccinated patients aren't getting sick and our frail, multiple co-morbidities vaccinated patients do need admission, but their admissions are shorter and they're able to leave the hospital after several days," O'Neal said. "Our unvaccinated patients are the sickest patients, they're the patients most likely to be on the ventilator."

The hospital is stretched so thin by the surging numbers, they're concerned they may not be able to "take care of patients the way we want to take care of them by tomorrow," O'Neal added.

"We're running out of tests, we're running out of room, we're inundated in the ER," she added.

Twitter permanently suspends Marjorie Taylor Greene’s personal account
    Martin Pengelly in New York

The personal Twitter account of the Georgia Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has been permanently suspended, for violating policies on misinformation about Covid-19.

Greene was issued a “fourth strike” in August, for saying vaccines were failing. That led to a seven-day suspension. A fifth violation prompted Sunday’s move by the social media giant.

“We’ve been clear that … we will permanently suspend accounts for repeated violations of the policy,” a Twitter spokeswoman said.

Greene is a determined controversialist and political extremist who has courted controversy and confrontation since being elected in 2020.

She has regularly been fined for refusing to follow Covid guidelines in Congress, including those regarding wearing a mask on the House floor.

On Twitter, her official congressional account remains active.

In a statement on Sunday, Greene called Twitter “an enemy to America” and said it could not “handle the truth”.

She also accused Twitter of seeking “a communist revolution” and said: “Social media platforms can’t stop the truth from being spread far and wide. Big tech can’t stop the truth. Communist Democrats can’t stop the truth. I stand with the truth and the people. We will overcome.”

More than 825,000 people have died of Covid-19 in the US, out of a caseload of nearly 55m. Many states are experiencing a surge of cases and consequent disruption to everyday life caused by the highly infectious Omicron variant.

Resistance to vaccinations and other public health measures has fueled both the pandemic and political tensions around it.

Greene has become a prominent voice among far-right Republicans stoking such tensions in Congress and around the country.
