yeah man I get you, trust me I've written up reams and reams of highly embarrassing and stupid things while high on amphetamine. my only saving grace is that the websites I chose to do it on were places that got deleted. plus 2018 is nothing like 2008. the internet is fucking crazy, and I wish you nothing but the best, but it's fucking weird that I'm just primed to save someone's potential dox "just incase" (of what?), as if we're all engage in intelligence warfare against each other (I think we are)

part of the issue is that its hard to interpret any single piece of literature or art and use that as a cornerstone for understanding virtues and values (whether this is the bible or LOTR or fightclub or whatever), because not only does the churn of a particular medium go so quickly, but new mediums are being introduced at a speed that isn't synchronized with our natural rhythms of cultural and growth. We've gone from agrarian to industrialized to an information society extremely quickly compared to the rest of our history, and it's going to take a lot of adjusting - assuming we've already plateaued in technological development. it is hard to gain a shared sense of perspective, and without shared values its increasingly likely that everyone will be adrift and all art will be nothing but taste (brought to you by Monsanto).

so if you want to compare modern schlock to modern schlock, that's fine. most of it is basically the same shit. some books explore different themes, or topics, but if you spend enough time in a library you realize a lot of it is fungible.
Trying to point at older, more historical books as examples of great literature is probably more accurate but also kind of disingenuous (does Poe count as old?), especially the further you go. I mean you could draw up some hundred point list of what makes good literature, but that kind of misses the point. Literature is good because words are magic, and it has magical effects on people.
It's hard to say what good writing is but it's easy to give tons of examples of bad writing.
