To make diacetyl we need thiamine (vitamin b1) pyruvate (glucose) and acetyl CoA "CoA is acetylated to acetyl-CoA by the breakdown of carbohydrates through glycolysis and by the breakdown of fatty acids through β-oxidation"
"The acetylation of CoA is determined by the carbon sources" which sounds a lot like BURNING A PLANT AND INHALING THE SMOKE to me
