    I wouldn't spend more than 40 bucks on a pen, pencil, knife that I can't test out. The one I had was just plated, but it was quite old and you could tell it was hand crafted. There are great writing utensils out there for just a few hundred that equal or outperform those opulant ones. I mostly use a pen. It is also important to consider the ink, nib, and even paper that you will be using. I like a rough, almost raw paper and a high flow, bold nib.
