I remember hearing a long time ago about some wood shop worker who had an accident with a saw that cut 2 fingers, and the hospital essentially told him "pick one to keep" because he was uninsured so he couldn't afford to keep both.
That's fucked up. If there's a human being who knows how to stitch fingers around and I lose 2 fingers, the only barrier to solving this problem is jedi gold… that's an artificial problem right there.

How would you pay your property taxes, utilities, homeowners insurance, and pay for routine maintenance of the home? I have only owned three houses in the 40 years I have been legally allowed to enter into contracts. I paid cash for all of them. The first one cost me around $1200 per month to operate between the aforementioned expenses while housing a family of 5. The second one was the least expensive to operate but it was also the smallest and least valuable property. It averaged about $450 per month to cover its nut. The one I am in now, not counting propane as I have not yet used the first tank and am unable to calculate that cost at this time, is running me around $400 per month plus whatever the propane costs actually are.
These numbers do not include what it takes to maintain the homes in terms of repairs and either equipment to maintain the landscaping or a service for that purpose. Not do they include food, clothing, entertainment (internet, streaming, video services, telecommunications etc), transportation costs, or even clothing.
So even assuming that Indiana is as shitty as Cleveland or Detroit where you can buy houses for as little as $10,000 how long do you suppose you could go without working before you ran through the other $30,000? Even if you could run the house for just $300 per month you would be broke in 8.3 years.
