I've put down animals before. It's not that, it's that she let it rot in the open for three days in the rain instead of digging a grave and for an animal she 'loved more than people.'
You are failing at farm life if you cannot dig a hole to bury an animal or even move it so that you don't have to look at it/smell it rotting or put any of the other animals on your farm in danger.
I've lived in India where they shat in the open and even those farmers knew to throw their dead animals down the river or burn them.
