Dreaming that you are not you, and feeling... okay. As a child. I didn't like myself IRL, but I liked myself in that dream. Add half a year in childhood of falling asleep every night imagining you were that girl again... and 20 or so years of my brain reinforcing that... it's not hard to see why I cracked eventually. :/
It's probably not the dream itself, but the subsequent years of fixation on it because the experience was so profound and enjoyable - the reward/happiness parts of the brain probably have more impact over it than the direct result of some stray neurons firing in one's sleep. -
