But it works by shining a massive infrared light to illuminate the area, this might be invisible to the naked eye, but anyone with night vision, infrared, or even a camera without an infrared enhancement on it can see you shining that massive light.
So to answer that question, yes, it's largely obsolete but Africans aren't known for their cutting edge weapons and equipment.
