Would insurgents have any use for infrared?

2024-12-10 at 6:22 PM UTCI was reading about some battle I think in Africa where the author was talking about being able to purchase Russian night vision goggles from sporting goods stores (90's?) I'm guessing they're infrared?
I'm assuming any modern military aircraft (and other things on the ground?) has equipment that can see infrared light? Even if you were able to hide from thermal. I read about the CIA using infrared lights to mark weapons for terrorists in some country they were trying to freedom in the 60s or 70s.
So is that obsolete as far as modern warfare? -

infrared is good if your opponents do not have access to inafrared tech. But it works by shining a massive infrared light to illuminate the area, this might be invisible to the naked eye, but anyone with night vision, infrared, or even a camera without an infrared enhancement on it can see you shining that massive light.
So to answer that question, yes, it's largely obsolete but Africans aren't known for their cutting edge weapons and equipment. -
