the original definition (before it was turned into a completely subjective political term) was non-state political violence, which is exactly what the j*ws brought to the middle east when trying to establish their ethnostate through Lehi and the Irgun (who literally CALLED THEMSELVES terrorists) and of course the 'legitimate' Hagana (who were in control of the other two, and ordered terror attacks like the King David Hotel bombing in order to destroy evidence of their involvement.).

if you look at the back of the pager theres a cover that seems like a generic cover for AA or triple AAA battery,
if lithium cells are involved it would have to be planted and can be the size of a small 12v remote control battery.
and if you look at the example of the blown pager i think thats what happened. it blew up on the side, instead of from the battery compartment.
lithium cells are really the only common component considering how many different types of devices have been exploding.
according to the original design spec the AP-924 pager has a builtin lithium backup battery as well as the standard AAA socket, but APOLLO has stated that the company they licensed the design to changed it as well. -

so the original assumption that the pager's firmware had been patched is likely incorrect; this may have happened completely without the manufacturer's knowledge.
the fact that different devices have been affected (reportedly radios, some phones, clock radios and even remote building access keypads) likely means that a common component has been compromised, the most likely culprit being the lithium cell because it'd be relatively easy to put a smaller cell in the housing and fill the void with explosive, then shorting and overheating the cell itself can act as the detonator.
if that's the case though, it'd mean that the means to receive a detonation signal would have to be in the battery pack as well, and by virtue of its size it'd have to be very simple.
it seems likely that the tampered battery pack contains a small lithium cell, an amount of explosives and a small radio antenna - no room for decoding chips or high resolution receivers or anything like that so it'd have to simply pick up a certain frequency and short the lithium cell.
it could even be that disposable AA/C/D batteries have been tampered with rather than the devices themselves. -
