tampering with the pagers en route, 20g PETN and a firmware hack that causes them to overheat the batteries to detonate the explosive it seems like -
2024-09-18 at 7:16 AM UTC in What are you thinking about....spoilers, but
it kind of got overshadowed by The Matrix because it came out around the same time with similar ideas and a much lower budget, but it was more story-driven rather than an action film.
a guy wakes up to find his coworker dead and bloodied clothes indicating he did it, but no memory of the act. he finds a clue indicating that there's information in the hyper-realistic virtual world that his team had been creating at the lab at work, and in the virtual world receives a message that he should drive to the edge of the city and ignore all roadblocks.
he knows this already; the virtual world, due to hardware constraints is only the size of a city and going far enough you'll see the 'edge' of reality. he finds that a virtual person has also discovered the message, seen the edge of the world and totally lost his mind.
the researcher eventually finds that the message was meant for the 'real' world, that he himself lived in a simulated reality roughly the size of a city, and upon discovering the edge is 'pulled out' by the hosts who created his world. they talk about how it's the first time a world they created has actually created a sub-world of its own, and it's unclear whether this world was real, or whether any 'reality' wasn't created by an endless cascade of virtual sub-worlds -

have you seen the movie The Thirteenth Floor? -

there's been nothing different or innovative about twitter since it was launched; the reason it was valued so highly is because of the massive userbase and the tools built in to direct advertising and control their discourse.
there are plenty of twitter clones around, if you want to control your own gay little echo chamber set up a mastodon instance -
2024-09-18 at 5:13 AM UTC in 5000 rockets hit Israelalso, it seems to be confirmed that the devices were APOLLO, not MOTOROLA.
APOLLO has made the statement that they no longer manufacture the pagers in question (AP-900), the design and branding is licensed to manufacturers in the EU.
unconfirmed reports from Lebanese customs indicate that the supplier was unwilling to ship directly to Lebanon so the shipment was diverted to Jordan, where it was held by customs and reshipped from there, which is likely where they were tampered with.
again unconfirmed, reports from the investigation team indicate that a specific message caused the device to short and overheat the battery which in turn caused the PETN to detonate.
***looking at the specs of the AP-900 it doesn't even use an internal lithium cell so that doesn't really make sense either. people did reportedly notice devices heating up prior to explosion though (why I assumed it wasn't C4 or another explosive that requires concussive force to detonate) so something was triggered as a detonator -

at least one 10 year old died from being at neck level when it went off
probably won't get accurate casualty numbers for a few days given how slammed the hospitals are but secondary stuff like car crashes from explosions in the car, or guys getting popped while operating machines and stuff like that will blow up secondary deaths too -

Originally posted by Charles Ex Machina also this means an invasion is imminent.
Hez says they discovered the explosives in one of the new pagers, which forced israel to trigger the attack before they were ready to follow up with the invasion. if true they burned this attack vector; Hez and other groups will be much more careful with physical hardware in the future and will be vetting supply chains very closely.
I'm inclined to believe it, the best time to attack would've been during the panic.
so far there are around 4,000 reported injured and 8 dead. -

if they can hack apple and bypass their sophisticated security lock, modifying pagers with 0 security features will be as easy as molesting babies.
rewriting or patching closed-source firmware IS objectively a very difficult thing to do -

If it's a regular beeper with a triple A battery and you did something with that I couldn't see it doing that much damage. But I think high explosives are more powerful than gunpowder.
I've seen people say the explosion seems consistent with around 10g of C4 (thought it probably wasn't C4 that was used), you might be able to fit that in dead space, drill out the housing, or replace the standard battery with a smaller one so that it still operates but has more room for special features -

maybe, you'd need custom firmware to have it trigger an explosive when a specific message is received rather than just whenever it beeps or vibrates, and that is difficult to do without the manufacturer's help. it's like the time all the major hard drive manufacturers colluded with the NSA to embed data collection in the firmware, except this time it killed people.
also there's some disagreement whether the devices that exploded were made by MOTOROLA or APOLLO, a Taiwanese manufacturer.
Originally posted by Cowboy2013 Anyway why wouldn't Hezbollah not have a fuckton of radios already and just use those?
I'd assume so but I don't know how they run their communications. pagers are one-way only so I'd assume they use them for sending general updates to members, radios get used in the field -

almost certainly interfered with the supply chain and added explosives + custom code to pagers that were sent to Lebanon -
