My advice to new riders...for sport bikes anyway is to get a 1000 and not die the first week. As soon as you get comfortable on whatever you're on you will want more.
With cruisers it wouldn't matter though. Even a 1700 sounds scary but doesn't have an insane amount of horsepower.
The first time I had a passenger on the R6 I couldn't believe how much slower it felt. But the bike only weighs a few hundred pounds anyway so another person makes a difference. -
