2018-12-05 at 3:16 AM UTC in Are you good at job interviews?I used to like the idea of an on-the-job interview, still do like it in theory, but then I got burned on stupid "take home assignment" things in interview processes which boil down to an employer asking for several hours of your time as a screening process. That shit is a scam and I won't be doing another one. I imagine "come work for me for a day" would be an even more exploitable model.

You'd have to recognize and then synthesize speech, both of which are things where the state of the art is fairly good but not perfect. If you want to re-synthesize in a specific speaker's voice that makes it harder and requires a significant training corpus. -

Oh, US warmongering has had a pretty big effect on me. It's a big part of why my country is as wealthy as it is today, why I got to go to college for free, why it's easy for me to find a well paying job. US exploitation of just about anybody it can get away with exploiting has been a wonderful thing for me.
This might be difficult for your small addled mind to grasp because basic human decency is beyond you but it's possible to be opposed to exploitation and murder, even when it provides some kind of benefit to you. -

As far as any politician goes, they’re mostly bullshitters. But in camparison to our current POTUS, he’s an archangel.
Why? I have zero love for Trump but really how different are they? In my book the ability to avoid US entry into an unnecessary war is the primary virtue of a US president, there are other issues I care about of course but our nation's track record of warmongering is so bad that literally not engaging in mass murder would be all it would take to be one of the best presidents our country has ever had. And both papa Bush and Trump have failed in this respect. Syria is a little more heinous than the gulf war IMO but this hardly makes Bush an "archangel" by comparison.
Bush's "thousand points of light" punt on social issues may have had better speech writers behind it than what Trump does but it's just as empty as Trump memeing. He dedicated most of his life to our country. Not a one of us here can say that.
Why is this something to be proud of? Why is "dedicating your life" (while collecting a fat chunk of wealth) to our country good? Our country has been in a perpetual state of war for longer than I've been alive, anyone dedicating their life to that should be fucking ashamed of themselves.Ya’ll give me shit for not doing anything to change this world, well, he did his best. He was a man of dignity that led us through some terrible shitty times.
How was he a "man of dignity"? How does the "terrible shitty times" he was president in justify what he did?
Here's a list of some other men of dignity, who did their best to change the world, and led their respective countries at one of the darkest hours in history:
I still think he has a beautiful family, there’s bad apples everywhere, you can’t blame him for their faults.
So we can sing his praises for the virtues of his family (which have yet to be given BTW) but the failings of that same family, namely the deaths of thousands of Americans and many many more non-Americans, when he nepotismed his family into power is somehow just not his fault? -
2018-11-29 at 3:46 AM UTC in Ryo FukuiSince I've been working on some algorithmic piano composition stuff I've been getting more into kinda piano-centric jazz. Ryo Fukui's Scenery has been popping up in my youtube recommendations for like years and people have suggested it to me multiple times but it never really clicked for me until now. This track in particular really does it for me:
Apparently he only started teaching himself piano in his 20s which makes it that much cooler to me as someone who hasn't seriously perused music in a productive capacity before. It's easy to feel like you're never going to get anywhere if you didn't practice for a billion hours since you were 6 years old or something.
Anyone else into Fukui? Suggestions for further listening from his discography or other musicians with a similar style? -

POTUS is about the same sort of achievement as "king of hell", it might be hard to get there but it shouldn't earn you any respect. From the "lovely family" he spawned we got one mass murderer and one governor of Florida, I'm not sure which is worse. You might be lucky to live the life of a president but you'd still be a asshole the world is better off without. -

Originally posted by HampTheToker Not really. I talk with him about treating others with respect and the golden rule and all that. Guidance trumps exposure. Sitting a kid in front of things like that without giving them perspective, I think, is where problems can arise.
I'm not one of those dads that shames his kid for having an interest in video games. I like to play too, so it's something we do together. Honestly, he gets more angry and frustrated with Fortnite than he does anything else, and that game is cartoony as hell. He's really good at it, so he gets pissed off when he gets robbed. If he was left alone to deal with that on his own it would be one thing, but I'm there to keep him in check when he feels like throwing his controller through the damn TV.
I don't make the mistake of leaving him to deal with his emotions on his own. Talking your kids through their shit and not treating them like they're too young to understand solves a lot of problems.
He'll be 9 in a couple months. He's a good kid with a big heart. I couldn't have been luckier.
Yeah, I wouldn't even think to worry about anything like fortnite. I mean obviously it's possible to respond to frustration inappropriately, and talking about that is important, but that's not something limited to videogames by a long shot. Even in the case of extremely violent games, I don't really think the issue is like "oh they're a kid so they're going to learn to be a psychopath if they see violence".
I think it's more like "intense" violence is a special case of a more general phenomenon of a highly stimulating experience and damn near everyone is overstimulated these days, adults and children, it's just it seems more worthwhile to moderate that pathology in children since they're going to have to live with the fallout of that for longer.
Maybe that's a dumb sentiment, I wouldn't put it forwards as some kind of fact that someone's a bad parent for disagreeing with. It's just sometimes I think about if I had the endless stream of things like movies and videogames and stuff I have now when I was a kid, stuff that's just so in-your-face "entertaining" or "intense" I'm pretty sure I would literally never have picked up a book out of interest or for fun. Like if you tried to convince 12 year old me to read Dune, this fairly slow, weird, and kind of figurative old scifi story that consists in large part of monologues, now one of the favorite novels of all time, when I had new-era-CoD or left-4-dead or whatever other 0 down time, all action game there just would have been no chance in hell of convincing me to undertake what ended up being a really fulfilling experience. -
