Anybody here work as a machinist?
-
2019-10-24 at 12:19 AM UTCI want to learn machining because it is cool as hell and something about the extreme precision turns me on.The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire!

2019-10-24 at 12:22 AM UTCThis is an oldschool profession and is being replaced with CNC machining in the U.S. Just so you know. Lots of machinists are salty that they are losing their worth on the job market right now.The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire!

Makes sense, CNC is basically a straight upgrade if you can afford it now. That would be fun to learn at some point too, actually. But I wanna shave metal with a spinny thing and H A R D E N E D T O O L S :( -
2019-10-24 at 12:43 AM UTCdo you have a job? like i havent heard about it if yes
-
2019-10-24 at 12:49 AM UTCI was a machinist for four years.

2019-10-24 at 12:59 AM UTCread title as "anyone here work as a masochist?"
All I know about machinist's is christian bale lost 700 lbs for that movie and it played in the background once when I was fucked up and I retained nothing. I used to have a job cutting pipe with a machine that could easily chop your fingers off.
I think you're better suited for a sewing machine -

2019-10-24 at 1:51 AM UTCisn't allowing me to post one of the gages i've did the jig grinding for:
we are in my workfield now:
Gages, Fixtures & Prototype Parts
Build, complete or partial
Repair
Hold Close Tolerances
Complete Part Inspection
Fabricate, from sketch or verbal instructions
Modify or Alter to customer's request
To 80 millionths accuracy
Electronic File Transfer
Specialized & General Machining
Wire EDM
Jig Grinding
Surface Grinding
Jig Bore
Milling
CNC Fourth Axis Milling
Lathe
CNC is for LOSERS!!
to be a real Toolmaker you must know:
1) trigonometry (we use the triangle and work off of the Right Angle)
2) Metallurgy to understand the density of the metal to know how fast you can use a cutter (end mill made of high speed steel, or carbon, or possibly with diamond plated, could be a ceramic end mill...just so many and each uses a different speed per the type of material)
3) need to understand x-y-z (x = left to right or right to left)(y = front to back or back to front)(z = up and down)
4) need to know GD&T = everything you see on a BLUEPRINT is defined by GD&T
5) Machinist Handbooks are really the BIBLE of the Machine Shop so penny up and buy the recent $150 dollar version
6) need to know what Tolerances mean
7) need to understand the ZERO Scale that numbers run both on the Positive and Negative sides.
8) need to know what a standard Mill, Lathe, Grinder are and you will need 8,000 hours on all Machines to be qualified for your JOURNEYMAN'S CARD!!
9) find a position for Apprenticeship that will make you take classes at a Technical University.
10) THERE WILL NEVER BE A DUMB QUESTION SO ASK IT INSTEAD OF WRECKING MY MACHINE EQUIPMENT!!
there are so many more things to list, but after 20 years doing this that 10 things to consider about the Machine Shop Environment just flew off the top of my noggin..The following users say it would be alright if the author of this post didn't die in a fire! -
2019-10-24 at 1:59 AM UTCi forgot one:

2019-10-24 at 2:04 AM UTCI watched a guy get his hair caught in a lathe, and it ripped a huge patch of meat off his scalp, skin and hair and all, and then the chunk of scalp went around so fast it sprayed blood everywhere, on the walls, floor, ceiling and on everyone standing near him. A few people in the room started shrieking and yelling and running away in a ducked position. It was pretty comical.

it's why i say tuck your shirts in and roll up your long sleeves and wear a smock.
machining is flat out dangerous when you think just on a lathe alone you can easily turn aluminum 6500 rpms WOW!! that is moving faster than Nascar on meth!! -

And that guy had been ordered by the operations manager numerous times, first thing in the morning, to wear a hair net and tie back. He always said, yah, yah, and never did, but that was his last day. Shut down the whole floor for a day while they cleaned up all the blood splatter.
