btw, owls have extraordinary good hearing which they also employ to make them very skilled hunters.

they're great hunters. just like all successful animals they've evolved to take best advantage of the environment they live in. evolution favors those that do, those that don't become extinct.

2019-07-11 at 7:50 PM UTCI wonder what the criteria and formula is for separating good vs bad hunters. Maybe you could say everything that is extinct or endangered are the poorest and whatever predatory animal there is the most of in the world is the greatest.
You could factor in death rate per 100 or how many successful kills per day per animal capita, but then youd have to figure out animal's individual digestion rates and their association with how often a particular animal needs to even hunt , like snakes or whatever that can eat one big meal and be good to go for months. Maybe snakes are the best hunters for that reason. -

True. I think it's closer to 8x if you go by the TRUE normal of most humans which is probably closer to 30/20. The page I just looked at said only about 35% have 20/20 or better. -
2019-07-11 at 7:55 PM UTCman has caused many extinctions through over hunting. but then other species have gone extinct just because their natural food source went extinct, often because they were too good at hunting also.
animals usually thrive when there is an abundance of their natural food source. but this can then cause an imbalance enabling so many of that species to breed that they then overtake the food source causing their own extinction. their own success leads to their own extinction.

just because they're good at procuring foods doesnt make them good hunters.
their success rate of hunting rats is like 1 out of every 10 attempts, but because theres an a bundance of rats, they can try hunting them all night long and get like 5 rats after 50 attempts.
sure they thrives, doesnt make them a good hunter. -

1 in 10 kill rate is actually good, quite a lot of humans would struggle to maintain that even with a rifle, lol.
if you compare to what is considered one of the worlds apex predators, the tiger, which only has a 1 in 20 kill rate, the owl looks like a fucking pro.

I wonder what their kill to loss ratio is. I see that the African wild dog kill rate is 85% per chase, but then half the time their kill ends up being stolen by something else. -

that's what i mean, that is considered a high kill rate. african wild dogs are one of the most dangerous animals in whole of africa, and are well known for being one of africas top predators due to their ability to work as a group.
