2019-08-08 at 9:57 PM UTCFor the most part I simply don't believe that with 20K people bunched together out in the open with zero cover... multiple shooters in elevated positions in surrounding buildings all with rifles only killed 60 people?
Nigga no.
Breivik killed 77 by himself. Did all these coordinated and well armed killers just suck ass I guess? It's like shooting fish in a barrel. Or was the purpose of the attack to only kill 60ish people for some 4D chess reason? -

What does that have to do with an expert showing scientifically that there were shots from multiple areas? "I just cant believe it" does not work. There are some really unbelievable things that happen, every single day. -

You're being disingenuous with the facts. There were also 422 wounded. 59 dead and 422 wounded. That's a hell of a lot of people for one helicopter shooter and one hotel shooter to reach. -
2019-08-08 at 10:12 PM UTCVery well-planned, too, the way they waited for the band to start playing to try and cover the sound of the automatic rifles in the distance, then they turned off the lights just as the bullets started hitting the ground, so people couldn't see an escape path.
“We were under a big spotlight, and someone said: 'Turn off the light.' They shut it off, and you could see and hear bullets hitting the ground."

Because the expert is not an expert.
I will be perfectly honest, your reply made me want to not be intellectually lazy so I actually clicked the vide. Initially didn't watch the video at all.
So then I clicked on it, read the description and said "this guy is absolutely not an expert in anything remotely related to audio" because I immediately noticed a basic scientific error in under 5 seconds that destroys this video. I will explain this shortly.
Then to verify I'm not just hallucinating vs the word of a real audio expert, I did the research on the gentleman in the video. If he was a real expert, I intended to go and do some reading on acoustics and fix my misconceptions.
Not necessary.
He is not an expert.
He is a supplement peddler who appears on InfoWars as their "expert" on some shit. He is the owner of the conspiracy site Natural News, which was banned from many platforms like FaceBook for spreading literal fake news.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/facebook-removes-conspiracy-site-natural-news
His highest credential that he uses to make himself seem credible is the title of "Lab Science Director of CWC Labs"... which is his own supplement peddling company. On its website, he again does not list any academic credentials for his bio.
https://www.healthrangerstore.com/pages/about-us
From this I can surmise that he either didn't go to college or has an unimpressive degree.
However, that does not make him wrong. But it does mean he has literally zero authority, and his analysis must stand basic scientific scrutiny. So I can now dismantle his argument simply.
The basic error is... This entire video is analysis of audio from a single microphone, a cell phone.
The way audio capture works is literally the reverse of audio playback.
To play audio, the cone of a speaker vibrates back and forth, compressing the air into sound waves. Consider that this is the only information leaving the speaker, a simple forward and backward reciprocating motion. All audio data needs to be compressed into this paradigm for the speaker. The only "dimensions" of information you get are frequency, amplitude and wavelength.
A microphone is essentially that but turned around: it receives an incoming sound wave that makes it reciprocate back and forth, and these movements are recorded. Again, all the information has to be encoded in this paradigm.
You cannot in any way determine position from audio data from a single microphone… Ever. The entire video is essentially trying to do this by "analysing" amplitude. This is retarded.
The way your hearing works to positionally locate audio is with TWO "mics", your ears. The key information we use for this is the DELAY between the audio of the two microphones.
Even if you have two mics or ears in pretty much the same location, on one head, they're not really going to get significantly different amplitudes of sound, and the frequency and wavelength will always stay the same. This gives you no real information. The key factor is the delay.
I actually know a lot about this specifically because of HRTF audio in videogames. If you play a game like Counter Strike 1.6 or Quake with mono audio through your headphones, you won't be able to locate shit. Turn on stereo + HRTF to get delayed positional sounds, and you'll be able to pinpoint a negro literally all across the map.
Test it yourself! Play a song on your phone at a low volume, put it down, stand up and close your eyes, the slowly soon around. Feel how easily you can locate the audio and follow it. Try moving around a bit, you can literally navigate a bit by using the sound as a "landmark". Now try again with one ear plugged up tight by twisting in your pinky!
TL:Dr: he is trying to use the amplitude on a single microphone audio recording to determine position and direction, and this means he is a retard.
He also sells scam natural supplements and promotes through InfoWars and has zero credentials that make him any sort of expert, which means he is retarded for at least 3 independent reasons.. -

I'll be honest. This reply has me second guessing myself. -
2019-08-08 at 11:35 PM UTCHe was wasn't measuring for location at all, he was comparing the two different sounds to each other. A very simple process. It's the difference between the two sounds which establishes the bullets leaving the barrel and then hitting the ground, and the difference between the two produces the distance.

2019-08-08 at 11:39 PM UTCIt isn't about direction of the sound. It's about the delay, in seconds, between the two different sounds. That's all.

Sound isn't a global phenomenon. If you are standing on the opposite side of the shooter from where the bullet impacts, the report will always come before the sound of impact. The sound of the shot will travel first towards you, the the shot of the impact from further away. And vice versa. The microphone gives you three pieces of information only: frequency, amplitude, wavelength. You can get the same values for two of those parameters by an infinite number of combinations of a different magnitude and distance.
You can't establish the relative location of the impact and report to the audio source with a single microphone.
This anal-lysis is completely worthless without position. -
2019-08-08 at 11:43 PM UTCThe low pitched sounds are the bullets leaving the barrel from a distance. The high-pitched sounds are the bullets hitting the ground up close. The lag time between those two sounds can be fitted into a simple equation which gives you the distance between the two. This has nothing to do with any quality of sound, it's just a comparison between two sounds.

You don't need quality of sound, just relative positions. The guy starts with the assumption of "if you're standing at ground zero" and rinsneithbitneven though there is literally zero reason to know where I relation to those two points that the microphone is. How hard is this for you to understand.
It's like trying to analyse to two vertices of a triangle from the third vertex... But you don't know the length of any of the sides. -

You don't need to know where the microphone is. The microphone can be anywhere, and the two sounds will still have the exact same lag time. -

No, they won't. Are you mentally defective? It has to travel different lengths of time depending on the position of two points and the mic. Literally imagine a triangle.
