Originally posted by aldra Unofficially 22 were fired at an ammunition depot; all but one were intercepted (mostly by PANTSIR units) and the one that made it through injured three soldiers and caused 'minor' damage.
Official count is 16 missiles fired, 14 intercepted. Not bad.
It was a mix of israeli 'DELILAH' cruise missiles and US GBU-39 SDBs - the two that made it through were GBU-39s. -

Originally posted by aldra lol, I haven't been following that. He dissolved the entire government? Is it related to the fraud charges he's facing? Because I don't understand how dissolving the government is meant to help at all.
Oh yeah, that jedi outburst distracted me - the SAA has set up significant positions in the Manbij area directly between the TAF and SDF, meant as a buffer to prevent hostilities from escalating. The SDF is still officially refusing to hand territories over to the SAA, but mid-level commanders are willing to deal and an Egyptian delegation is being sent as a mediator for high-level negotiations.
like with british and other european countries, they have elections when they feel the lack of support to push thru some new laws / policies. -

Originally posted by aldra I wasn't joking about this.
One of the most effective ISIS units was the Dzhokhar Dudayev Battalion, a group of Chechens, largely military-trained combat veterans - I believe it was largely this unit's use of snipers that stopped the SDF in their tracks and gave them such a high casualty count when they were moving into Raqqa (I know for sure a Chechen unit was in charge, I'm not certain if it was this one). Their stated goal was to establish the Islamic State so that it could help support their struggle against Russia back home.
Ukraine has folded them in as a 'Volunteer Battalion', and renamed them the Kiev-2 Battalion.
Repost because this is getting more attention among British independent reporters - more ex-ISIS Chechens are flooding into the Ukraine explicitly to 'fight Russia'. -

The SDF apparently hasn't entered Manbij proper, but has units and hardware including the famed Tigers stationed north and west, specifically around the town of Al-Arimah, as a buffer between the SDF and TAF.
The local Kurdish tribal leaders have gathered in Manbij and agreed on the following five key points (NOTE: This is specifically the local Kurdish communities, this agreement does not extend to the SDF/YPG/PKK/any other independent military group):
1. Syria is to be independent and indivisible under the current leadership of Bashir Al-Assad (ie. they're not interested in the western-backed agenda to push for elections excluding Assad).
2. To avoid or repel any Turkish invasion in the area, in Manbij proper or the surrounding regions (ie. they agree to offer no support whatsoever should Turkish forces invade).
3. To support a military response to Turkey if they should invade.
4. To immediately allow Syrian troops entry to Manbij and all surrounding regions (ie. the local Kurds support the SAA, even if the SDF that control the area do not).
5. For the sovereignty of Syria (ie. they do not support the plan to partition a Kurdish or any other ethnostate, nor do they support Syria being beholden to any foreign power).
This is excellent news (and a solid strategy) likely to be buried in western media because it demonstrates that the statements made by the SDF do not necessarily reflect the wishes of the locals. Without local support the SDF is delegitimised as an illegal foreign (invading) army, and if it can be deflected or broken up without direct conflict it will solve both the problem of Syria reclaiming its borders and Turkey having to deal with a hostile 'terrorist' state on its border.
I'm not sure if anyone else has said it, but now would be a perfect time for another false-flag attack, chemical or otherwise, in the Manbij region as a means to force the locals to reconsider their allegiance. I hope it doesn't happen, but hope isn't worth much. -
2018-12-31 at 7:09 AM UTCTurkey has ordered all of its FSA proxies to withdraw from the Manbij contact line. It looks as though the looming attack has been aborted, or at least postponed.

According to the NYT, almost all of the mercenaries KSA has been contracting from Sudan have come from Darfur (largely desolate and destitute thanks to previous wars), and roughly 1/5th of their fighting force is children 14 or younger. -

Or not. Lots of reports of Turkish MBTs (tanks) either entering Syria or being positioned on the border just north of SDF positions. -
2019-01-01 at 1:23 PM UTC2019 is the year Turkey gets nuked.

2019-01-01 at 1:46 PM UTCCockroaches are the only thing that survives nukes though. We'll have to overturn all the chemical weapons conventions and build a giant can of RAID to get Erdogan back in line

Like I mentioned in another thread, it's hard to make long-term predictions because some of the actors are inherently unpredictable. I'll write more when I have a keyboard.

Samson and Delilah. It's amusing that israel accuses everyone else of religious extremism while naming their weapons (and often re-designating foreign weapons they've bought) after characters from their religious texts -

It was a mix of israeli 'DELILAH' cruise missiles and US GBU-39 SDBs - the two that made it through were GBU-39s.
israel strikes again (11/1), again targeting a warehouse on the grounds of Damascus International Airport. This is just routine, really, but a few notes:
1. S-300 systems aren't yet fully operational; they're still slated for integration at the end of this month. IAF tactics this time around indicate that I was likely right previously, that the S-300 radar is at least being used to augment the current anti-air network's tracking and targeting.
2. Unofficial reports indicate that 10 'DELILAH'-type cruise missiles were fired from F-16s, 8 were intercepted. It does not appear US-made SDBs were used this time; the attack was possibly launched from outside of their range.
3. The F-16s engaged from Lebanese airspace as opposed to the Mediterranean as they usually do, apparently making their approach and escape unusually low (attempting to evade long-range radar) over the city of Tyre. This would indicate that Russian ECMs on the coast, centered around Latakia and Tartus, are having a significant effect on their ability to conduct operations there and that Syrian radar capabilities are becoming a serious concern.
Next post I'll do a quick cost assessment of the attacks, because I've seen a few people state that the costs of munitions alone would've been at least 10x the value of damage they did
***kept saying S-200 instead of S-300 -
