Syria - Anti-air missiles sparked off above Damascus, SAA and independent sources are claiming several targets have been brought down but no details (I don't know how many/what kind of missiles were fired) yet. SAA is claiming it was an israeli attack on Iranian barracks south of Damascus, israel is denying as usual.

Due to the presence of the new(ish) S-300-PMU2 units, israel would've had to have fielded drones, surface-surface missiles or the F-35 - their older jets would be too expensive a risk.

I personally think it's unlikely, but I'm going to laugh pretty hard if the SAA posts photos of a downed F-35 in a few hours.

***Unofficial reports from inside SAA indicate an F-16 and several cruise missiles were shot down.

***Likely not an F-16. RIA's source said aircraft, they paraphrased.

OK, important context I wasn't aware of:

Apparently Syrian crews are still being trained to use the S-300s. Until that process is complete, the S-300s will be under Russian control, linked with their existing AA systems around Tartus. The training is expected to be complete in late January, at which point the S-300s will be handed over and integrated into the Syrian AA network.

What this means is that until late January, the S-300s will not be used to engage air targets unless the Russian facilities at Tartus/Latakia are under threat. This is public information, so israel appears to be trying their luck before the S-300s can be used against them.

    Pantsirs and Buks, predictably.

A new development though - Russia apparently gave the SAA access to their radars and tracking data, dramatically reducing their response time and increasing interceptor accuracy. It'll be interesting to compare the hit rate to the last few attacks.

Ukraine - Ukraine has sent three warships into the Kerch Strait off of Crimea, ostensibly toward the port of Mariupol. Russia has stated that the Ukrainian authorities made no attempt to request access to Russian territorial waters, so the warships (a tug and two gunboats) were intercepted, captured and apparently sent back to their base.

This appears to be a pre-planned provocation as Poroshenko's using it to justify martial law and full mobilisation of the military - NATO is backing the Ukraine and failing to recognise Russian territorial waters around Crimea but support seems tentative - NATO does not want to go to war over this, as Porky no doubt hoped.

Ukrainian SBU (military intelligence) units were on the ships. Russia has released documents taken from the ships that explicitly outline their goal, to position themselves beneath the Crimea bridge and to provoke the Russian navy into attacking them.

The following is unsubstantiated but interesting, allegedly coming from sources inside the FSB:

Apparently the captains of the gunboats were ordered by the SBU officers on their ships to open fire on the Russians when they arrived - understandably they were not told about this prior to entering Russian waters as attacking the Russian navy inside the Black Sea is *literally* a suicide mission - and both refused. One of the captains was shot, non-fatally, for 'disobedience'.

The Ukraine (they hate it when you put 'the' in front because it reminds them that Ukraine is just a Russian word for 'periphery', 'the ukraine' meaning 'the far edge (of Russia)') is prepping further large-scale attacks against the breakaway republics in the East, and leaked documents have apparently shown they have a range of possible provocations planned to justify that.

One particularly troubling one is the possibility of chemical attacks to be blamed on the rebels, who are have released photos of of British special forces bringing gas masks and other NBC protection in, along with crates marked with hazmat symbols. That alone doesn't prove anything, but the possibility is there.

As for the US, I don't know of any new developments but they've had a hand in Ukrainian politics and military ever since Porky was brought into power. As of late I get the distinct impression that they're getting tired of Porky's antics, because all of his recent political stunts against Russia (the whole MH-17 fiasco, piracy in the black sea, sending gunships into Russian-Crimean territorial waters) have backfired so spectacularly that not even the entire western media machine has been able to make it look good.

Several new reports of unit commanders being executed for refusing to participate in offensives in the east, ostensibly justified under martial law. Official records list them as having committed suicide.

I didn't really think it was newsworthy; not even the US military seems to care all that much, it's just righteous indignation that not everyone is buying the company line on Venezuela

I remember reading that Russia was in talks with Cuba to reopen their old military communications facilities, which should be interesting...
