didnt have computer till 99.

it's kind of the same concept as the big 5.45 disks. in 99 you had the floppy disks didn't you? same thing. the 1 meg.

I watched a documentary showing the aging US defense ICBM systems still us those big ass floppy 5 inch

no. the 5-inchers were on their way out being replaced by the 3-inchers in the early 90's

i dont know what documentary you were watching but in the mid/late 90s the 'high-end' storage for portable military data was Bernoulli drives. regular portable data storage was the 3-inchers and/or the original 'zip' drives.

in 99 floppies were gone and replaced by 'zip' or CDs

i have a tape drive from my commodore 64 somewhere in my garage or storage. i think the modem is in there too. irony: i can use my samsung galaxy note 4 as an internet connection to any internet-capable computer and the modem is literally about twenty times larger.
