They're fictional and don't seem to encourage bad acts.
fun fact:
The Beachball alien in Dark Star was voiced by Nicholas Charles "Nick" Castle Jr, who played Mike Myers in Halloween (The characters name.. not the actor)
He did writing for John Carpenter who also worked on Dark Star. He help write Escape from NYC.

it would be data not video I think.. like in the 80s I had a cassett audio tape to download data only to reinstall audio patches.
of course now it would be a thumbdrive or something the size of a tictac -

no. the 5-inchers were on their way out being replaced by the 3-inchers in the early 90's
i dont know what documentary you were watching but in the mid/late 90s the 'high-end' storage for portable military data was Bernoulli drives. regular portable data storage was the 3-inchers and/or the original 'zip' drives.
in 99 floppies were gone and replaced by 'zip' or CDs -

i have a tape drive from my commodore 64 somewhere in my garage or storage. i think the modem is in there too. irony: i can use my samsung galaxy note 4 as an internet connection to any internet-capable computer and the modem is literally about twenty times larger. -
