I'm pretty sure he knows English. Your chink runes may have the highest population of native speakers... many of whom also can't read your username because they're illiterate/children/blind - people who SPEAK but can't read or write, but I digress. Point is, English is the global lingua franca. Even people in China speak English.~
Also most of the world's LAND is not populated or possessed by speakers of Chinese/Mandarin, native or otherwise. You will however find that you can communicate with some people in just about every country by knowing English. Chinese is probably the world's second most useful second language for someone to know. If you just want to travel to new places you can explore pretty much every country in the Americas by knowing English and Spanish. I don't think there are any two other languages that will open up as much land to you. So Spanish is pretty good in that regard. 2 continents worth of people to talk to.
