by steaming water (boiling it) the water is actually removed from the salt/sediment when it evaporates and leaves everything with a higher boiling point behind. desalination is more like a means of filtration...reverse osmosis-ish...and leaves behind a nasty ass slurry of sludge. you should see the ones in saudi arabia...they stink. the best part is they pump the shit right back into the ocean.
as far as living off distilled water: false. other than protein drinks and gatorade-related drinks, all i drink is distilled water. its a myth that distilled water does anything that you mentioned.
