It's like the surface of a balloon. You blow more air into it, the surface of the balloon itself expandsw. An ant can crawl around on it, but that surface "is" everything it can traverse.

What if the ant has wings?

but outside the balloon is more air/space.

Yes, because it is an analogy and therefore space-time is not literally a balloon. You seem to be missing the point. Anywhere you can traverse is on the surface of the balloon. There is nowhere else to go. And the amount of places you can go in the universe (not practically, I mean literally anywhere that "a thing" can "exist" in any way they is meaningful to us) are finite.

so what is the universe/balloon expanding into? has to be empty space

even if its an alternate dimension, that is still space. literally space.

It doesn't expand "into" anything, there are simply more points being created between existing points.

The universe isn't getting bigger like the aforementioned balloon, it is getting bigger in that the space between points is getting larger, and therefore capable of occupying more. It doesn't need to have any exterior space to "expand into".

is this just a theory or what? why isn't this on the news?

It was on the news... In the 1930s. This is pretty standard physics knowledge. The universe is only expanding in that the scale of space itself is expanding. This is an intrinsic expansion. If you were to this k of it as a balloon analogy, it would be as if the balloon had squares on it, and the squares were being subdivided. There is no real easy analogy for it, that's why we have advances physics. It is a metric expansion.

yeah but its still just theory tho right? i mean let's face it, they'll put any old shit on the news.

It's just a theory like evolution is just a theory; we can't deductively prove it, but it is supported by a mountain of evidence and all our existing, valid models accept it and build on it.
