In many animals species, the mother will oust an unhealthy or otherwise hindered member of the litter, in order to benefit the situation for the rest of the offspring. Sometimes the male will do it, as with male lions.

My dog once found another dogs puppies, and attacked them.
It looked a lot like that. I remember one half puppy she ripped in half, looked just like that kitten, except the puppy was still alive. He was crying and looked so sad. The half puppy tried to crawl away, but once she was done eating it's lower half she came along and ate the top half. Cracked the skull right in her mouth. The noise.
