nas drives are rated to be in constant use, desktop drives aren't
dunno if there's any measurable difference in performance or lifespan but the warranty is usually different

You can create even more "phantom data" on the drive by using WinPAR. WinPAR creates a compressed archive (Parity Volumes) with PAR files. The PAR files can reconstruct completely missing data in the archive. So you can create a 12-part PAR archive, delete four of the parts, then use the much smaller PAR repair files later to reconstruct the missing data.
