Of course I can't sustain it, there's a neurological aspect to mental fatigue, genuine limits.
It probably developed over time, stemming from certain neurological traits of Asperger's. The severe OCD causing a feeling of compulsion to read everything and gather information, the hyperfocus state you can enter, and, practically, out of a necessity to be able to get through writing in a reasonable length of time. Tons of factors.
Then again, content does have a massive impact. If it was scientific literature or mathematics I wouldn't be able to go nearly as fast, just because it's so much more difficult to fully process, understand and retain.
Still, it's a pretty useful skill to have, being able to get through common writing at such a speed. Even news articles and Wikipedia tend to be pretty easy to get through when I actually concentrate.
Sure as shit haven't put it to good use, though, and I constantly feel the need to switch materials. -

God, I don't know how he put up with it for so long if it was at such an extreme level. Of course, he could be exaggerating or just have an inaccurate gauge of his own traits, but it does sound genuinely extreme. -

You know, it was actually revealed that the Israeli government was literally using people on the autism spectrum for some of their programs due to their ability to concentrate (hyperfocus) for long periods of time on specific things, notice small details, pattern recognition, etc. It was some form of photographic and videographic analysis, IIRC. I've posted before about some pretty fascinating studies I found on visual acuity, quantified differences in the amount of sensory information taken in and how it's processed.
