sure, but it was never a moral issue nor was slavery the only thing being contested.
the party line is that the war was fought because 'slavery is bad', but Lincoln was willing to support amendments to the constitution protecting it if the South were to give up their economic power and he was quite open about his belief that blacks should never be given full equality -
