My main thing is wanting to be able to translate the sounds in my head into the music.. any thing I've dabbled in in the past was just fucking around with presets and making a song that way.
that's whats so awesome about something like fruity loops, and like I said I'm using it as an example since its what I know. im not sure how it works in ableton or anything else. but taking a basic idea for a song you have, especially something easy like the beat, can be set up in literal minutes. melodies and such are harder, and honestly if you want it to sound good you want to spend more than just five minutes on anything. but it is really easy for me to just make a very generic four on the floor edm song, grab any random audio sample from something (pewdiepiewhatanigger.mp3), and bam you have a "song".
pick a kick, pick a snare, pick a clap, open up the piano rolls for each one. go ham. open up one of the synths and create a sound, use that to make a melody, grab a good clip of a racial slur, put it together in different patterns and you have a song. you don't even need to eq or fuck around with lows and mids or anything if you don't want to. be the sex pistols. just make music -
2021-08-23 at 12:31 PM UTCDo you know how audio clips work with copyright laws? Not that it matters with personal use but I mean does one have to pay royalties for sampling little soundbites from tv shows or other songs or whatever?

2021-08-23 at 12:36 PM UTCAnd nah I ain't trying to just make 20 stupid songs as fast as I can. I'll probably spend a month working exclusively on the first song I make as Im also learning the ropes. I ain't tryna to make garbage I want to make my first thing be something that would pass off as genuinely enjoyable being played at a club for thousands of people.

I think sampling something and using it your own creative work is covered under fair use type stuff, but honestly who gives a fuck.

okay I see what you're saying. have another perspective: you will never finish even a single song if you "want to learn everything" and lean too hard on perfectionism. if you spend a decent amount of time on one song, but it's kind of garbage - still a song, but meh - just finish it and move on to the next one. seriously, starting from fresh will mean you've taken everything you've learned from the beginning of this journey and have a fresh new idea. trying to endlessly tinker with one song will get you absolutely nowhere. just own it and say fuck it my first album will be a bunch of experimental trash that I will never show to anyone but my closest friends. then start fresh with all that new knowledge.
although honestly try just making a beat. making a beat is technically very easy but also a good preview of if you have any musical talent at all -
2021-08-23 at 1 PM UTCThat makes sense to not put 100 hours into my first song, when you put it that way. See how easily persuadable I am? I ain't worried about making a beat I know Ill be fine in that department. I just really want to be able to produce something that isn't this cookie cutter bullshit that every edm song is these days. That's my goal anyway.. I'm actually pretty excited to see what I might be able to come up with. If I can use my extremely habitual personality to get addicted to making music I can see good things happening. I also get ahead of myself and not to remember to be realistic.
I appreciate your advice brotha. -

make sure to get feedback, especially if you have someone that shares your musical taste/vision. little suggestions can completely change how you see what you're working on for the better. btw you're welcome but also thank you for the random conversation about making music nice to pop in to an old tavern and appreciate the talk -

I'll probably be obnoxious when it comes to wanting feedback. I'm pretty critical of myself so seeking out approval and outside feedback is one of my go-tos, perhaps sometimes to a fault. Regardless I get excited about things to the point I HAVE to share them and often do so before I'm even done.
I'm gonna need to learn to be patient in that regard because I do have a tendency to rush things for that very reason. -
2021-08-23 at 1:17 PM UTCAnd thanks for popping into YE OLDE TAVERN. it ain't the tavern it used to be now it's more an abandoned dive bar with one song playing on repeat and no bartender.

Those are the kind of bars I like, basically empty, plenty of open pool tables, a nice alley to smoke in, no one hogging the music. Not exactly a poppin' place but a sanctuary, a refuge, a fortress of solitude(heroin). -

2021-08-23 at 3:10 PM UTCwhat I like about this particular thread in any of its incarnations across the carcasses of zoklet is that it's my own retarded genetic legacy. it's like giving birth to someone with downs syndrome except they exist in an indeterminate eternity that spans space and time and it will yell slurs at you.
