Categories like uptown, downtown, inner city, waterfront and so on also don't map onto any well-defined aspect of a city, but we know what they mean, and if I say I live downtown, but I really live in the suburbs, I'll get called out on it and it won't mean anything if I say neighborhood labels are just a social construct. I'm still going to be called a liar, and if I say there's no such thing as "neighborhood" because we can't articulate a precise definition of downtown and draw indisputable lines marking where it starts and stops, people are going to wonder what the fuck I'm blathering on about.

Which is exactly what I wonder about the "race is a social construct" zealots. What exactly is the point? None of y'all actually believe that. Take any prof standing in front of his classroom yammering away about race and social constructs then suddenly burst through the door, put a gun to his head, and tell him he's got three seconds to tell you how many black students are in his class and he will say "nine" immediately and be 100 percent right.

And, in fact, when the BLaMistas are out there protesting against white cops on behalf of black males, the races involved are real as shit ever gets. No one ever tells some yass queen ranting about black bodies she should pipe down because race is just a social construct. The only time 'race is a social construct' is ever thrown up seriously is to white people. For white people race is a social construct. In fact, I hear now that there really isn't even a "white race", per our old friends at the New York Times. Just lay down white boy and accept your socially constructed extinction.

The book is already closed on this discussion for anyone with a brain, the book has been deconstructed and its pages, and the pages of others, have been unbound and removed to be reconstituted into the modern study of economics. The resultant volume can be found in any economics 101 textbook.

I.e. we actually examine and operationalize some axioms of economic behaviour and then see how they relate to one another structurally and form these relationships into interactive models. This is all done to establish the mathematics.

Then we can take some particular economic problem we want to discuss (homelessness, unemployment, inequality, national priorities, whatever) or identify some particular instances, operationalize them to try and map them to economic models to analyse them and see where the actual issue is and how particular changes will affect it to suss out solutions that can be implemented in policy.

This last step that comnects it to the political stage is that each of those changes affect different groups in different ways and someone with the power to propose or implement policy has to make the decision of which one to pick.

Somewhere in that discussion you can start to have an argument about what decision should be made.

That is how educated discussion would ideally go but I'm not proposing we have to hold ourselves to that standard, as I'm not expecting anyone here to be an educated economist. I'm just showing it to you so you understand the type of discussion that one needs to have to actually talk about economics.

Because none of the problems of our world are caused by capitalism nor communism. Adam Smith's basic conditions of a pure capitalist "well functioning free market" have never once been met. Marx's utopia has never been established.

Talking in that dimension won't ever, ever even approach understanding even cases like why the USSR failed or why major portions of western economies are struggling, or anything else.

However we do have a way to analyse such cases: it is called actually studying some economics.

i already answered your question, yes, the kalenjin are another race, perhaps a subrace. now what? i never said all black people are the same.

No not "sub race", race. Then you would agree that populations with similar average foot speeds are one race, right?

this is the problem, you use vague terminology so you can later play with words and claim you meant something else. is the new jersey guy from your example an italian-speaking kalenjin born in new jersey? if not, then no he wouldnt be a kalenjin just because he runs fast but i doubt he would be running AS FAST as one anyway. i would imagine thats not the only trait that makes kalenjin different than other races anyway.

No, he is just some typical looking Italian American but he's got long legs and runs really fast, comparable to a Kalenjin Keynan.

By the trait we have just identified, running speed, you must classify him under the same category as the fast running Kalenjins. Because that is the criteria for the classification.

If not, you are appealing to some third "racial" property and not to the running speed at all, which was what you're trying to use to establish that property (of race) in the first place. It is circular logic.

We actually do have a categorization that can easily resolve this problem. It's called genetics. If he somehow has the same gene strongly associated with footspeed that Kalenjin do (maybe one of his grandmothers 40 times removed fucked a negro in the south of Italy and just by chance it pervaded through his otherwise entirely Italian ancestry), then you can rightfully connect the part of his lineage responsible for that to the same one as Kalenjins. If not and he is just fast due to some other lucky genetic or developmental factor, there's no connection. And that's pretty straightforward, as opposed to doing these weird mental gymnastics that become necessary to attempt an accurate description of human variation.

each region has humans of a certain kind of DNA which makes them have different traits. do you dispute any part of this?

Do humans from the region now known as Ukraine possess the same kind of DNA as humans from the region now known as Italy?

Everybody was bicycling, but there were lots of packed buses and tons of these fume-spewing beat-up taxi-vans called mi dian or something like that and all the Party leaders had private cars, so there was traffic. All the men smoked on all the mi dian including the driver then, one day about a year after I had arrived, there was an article in the China Daily that said to quit smoking cigarettes as it was bad for the health care system and to my great surprise the next time I got on a mi dian, no one smoked and no one ever did again that I saw. I thought to myself, wow. Now there's a difference. The whole country quit smoking in one day. (people – men– still smoked privately)

One night, I was on a mi dian with a couple of my students headed back to the university and the van halfway there just ran out of gas. The driver doesn't say a word, just grabs a gas can and disappears into the darkness. Everybody sits there for a long time, the men smoking in silence. Finally, the driver returns and gets in the van, cigarette dangling from his lips. He steps behind the driver seat and told the people there to move, raises up the top of the bench, unscrews the gas cap, which was literally inside the van, and, cigarette still dangling from his lips, begins to pour the gas into the tank. So I expressed surprise to one of my students who turned and translated it to the driver who made a dismissive grunt, took the cigarette out of his lips and stuck the lit end inside the tank. I still don't know what to make of that. Is their gas less combustible? Are we hyper paranoid?
