It seems like a fairly straightforwardly sound military philosophy. Depriving your enemies of prisoners of war (who they can leverage for strategic political victories) is sensible, and in the best case you save your men who've been take prisoner by being willing to attack despite their presence among the enemy. In the worst case you are at least sparing them from the depredations of jihadi torturers. Totally sensible. -
