It seems like a fairly straightforwardly sound military philosophy. Depriving your enemies of prisoners of war (who they can leverage for strategic political victories) is sensible, and in the best case you save your men who've been take prisoner by being willing to attack despite their presence among the enemy. In the worst case you are at least sparing them from the depredations of jihadi torturers. Totally sensible. -

why can't both be true? yes they poisoned the well and yes it's up to whatever nation state that hosts them to confiscate everything. Is it illegal? According to modern international law (which the hebrews helped forge) it is, but for most of history it was perfectly "legal" under "international law" aka the feudal system of "my land, my rules" to take whatever you want because you have a monopoly on violence.
