Basically teaches you the different sounds of Chinese. There are some sounds we don't have in English, plus learning pinyin is just good overall. Otherwise its hard to look up a word and pronounce it accurately.
It'll probably impress her a lot if you have good pronunciation. Chinese people get very impressed if you so much as use tones in 你好 lol. They dont expect people to want to learn I guess -
