Dangers and uses of opioids should be taught in drug education along some basic medical knowledge regarding drug safety in general. This includes basic prescriptions, women's care, OTC drugs, vitamins/supplements, recreational drugs, and of course opioids. Proper nutrition is already taught. Society clearly places importance on what we put in our bodies. Why shouldn't that extend to drugs? Fuck, I don't even remember learning about caffeine or sugar being addictive in school. I mean that's weird right? You teach kids about nutrition, and specifically talk about sugar, but not about how our bodies evolved to seek the shit.
To avoid people shooting up the pills, loaded single use IV syringes will be available upon taking a drug-tax funded class on injecting safely. Needles in general should be sold this way. Tolerance levels to be determined by professional on site through fantastical future machines and dosage is prescribed to you. Amount you can buy will be limited per week. Same goes for oral opioids. You can still overdose if you so choose, but you won't have a single powerful-ass death syringe/pill available to you. Really, it should be made as obnoxious as possible to overdose. And yes, people will definitely still kill themselves with opioids, but by doing this we can avoid all the uncertainty/ignorance that goes into it and actually put the safety and information into people's hands.
Snorting should not be available because that shit is retarded and needlessly damaging. Fentanyl should not be available, nor should heroin or any other low overdose threshold opioids that are easy to overdose on. Does it suck? Yeah. But when you're deciding policy based on harm reduction over freedom, you have to give up some things to keep people safe. Opiate addiction in and of itself is actually pretty benign. Won't cause liver damage. Won't cause brain damage. Won't fuck up your heart. The only long term effect is lowered levels of testosterone in men, but most of the time this goes away once you stop using. Your dopamine receptors eventually upregulate to their normal levels, unlike with some other drugs.
I don't care if people are addicted. Opioid addiction is easily functional. Future machines can tell if you are too dysfunctional to drive a vehicle or operate heavy machinery, and will be added as a required safety function in all vehicles in the age when all drugs are legal. Obviously some people will find ways to circumvent literally everything that I've detailed here, but that's not the point. The point is stopping the rampant accidental overdoses we're having now because people don't know what the fuck they're taking or how the fuck they're supposed to be safe about it. That last point goes beyond opioids. We really need to start educating people on the real world we live in as a basic lesson. Drugs, food, sex, laws, taxes, finances, relationships, philosophy, etc.
