    Mitch McConnell

    About

    Getting

    A straight Jan. 6 accounting

    MSNBC
Maddow Blog | Mitch McConnell changes his tune about the Jan. 6 investigation
    Steve Benen

Shortly before members of Congress left Capitol Hill for their holiday break, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell was asked what he hoped to learn from the committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack. I assumed he'd dismiss the bipartisan panel and its relevance.

But he didn't. "I read the reports every day," the Kentucky Republican told reporters, "and it'll be interesting to see what [investigators] conclude."

As NBC News noted, McConnell went a little further later in the week.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., said Thursday that he looks forward to seeing what the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol finds in its probe. "It was a horrendous event and I think what they are seeking to find out is something the public needs to know," McConnell said in an interview with Spectrum News.

In the same interview, he added, "I think the fact-finding is interesting; we're all going to be watching it."

At face value, this may not have seemed especially notable. The Senate GOP leader has never been one to echo crackpot nonsense about the pro-Trump assault on the Capitol, so it stood to reason he'd be comfortable with public answers to questions about what transpired on Jan. 6.

But given McConnell's efforts in May, this was not at all predictable.

Let's not forget that the original plan was for an independent, 9/11-style commission that would be responsible for investigating the attack. Democratic and Republican leaders negotiated the terms of how such a commission would be structured, and the expectation was that Congress would move forward in a bipartisan way after Democrats effectively endorsed all of the GOP's requests.

McConnell balked anyway. On May 19, the minority leader denounced the bipartisan plan, suggesting an independent investigation wouldn't produce any "new facts."

A week later, McConnell told his members a Jan. 6 probe was likely to undermine the party's midterm election message. By May 28, the top Senate Republican was reportedly telling his members he'd consider it "a personal favor" if they opposed the legislation to create an independent Jan. 6 commission.

An unnamed GOP senator told CNN, "No one can understand why Mitch is going to this extreme of asking for a 'personal favor' to kill the commission."

Conservative Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin told reporters the bipartisan plan was still likely to pass, adding that he hoped there were at least "10 good, solid patriots" among Senate Republicans. There weren't: McConnell convinced the GOP minority to kill the bill and block the creation of a commission.

And yet, here we are, seven months later, watching McConnell sing a very different tune. The minority leader who went out of his way to block an independent investigation is now publicly endorsing the House select committee's probe, telling Americans that what investigators "are seeking to find out is something the public needs to know."

What's far from clear is why in the world the Kentuckian's perspective has changed. Did McConnell learn important new intelligence as a member of the gang of eight? Is this a rhetorical shot across the bow at Donald Trump, who's working desperately to replace McConnell as the top Senate Republican?

I won't pretend to know what the senator is thinking, but as a recent Washington Post analysis concluded, "[What McConnell is] saying is a departure from his party that significantly hamstrings efforts to undermine the committee. And it's certainly worth keeping an eye on."

I've got a two story, four bedroom, two bath house with separate heating/cooling for upstairs/downstairs. I never use the upstairs and have a 4" thick foam "door" that I use to keep them separated. My gas and/or electric rarely exceed $100 (I don't think ever above $120) in a month. It is way too much house for me but it is paid for and, because I installed 90% or better furnaces and 13 and 14 SEER AC's my expenses are low.

He will most definitely have a place in the history books for being the only President who was impeached twice and led an insurrection that attempted to overthrow a legitimate election because his ego couldn't handle the reality that he was not wanted as President by a majority of over 7 million Americans as well as having lost to a woman by over 3 million votes.

QAnon dad accused of killing his kids over ‘serpent DNA’ feels ‘hopeless’ behind bars: report
    KATE FELDMAN

The California dad who allegedly murdered his children with a speargun because he thought they had “serpent DNA” has plenty of time to think about what he’s done in prison.

Matthew Taylor Coleman, accused of killing 2-year-old son Kaleo and 10-month-old daughter Roxy in Mexico in August, has been charged with two counts of murder for their deaths after being apprehended crossing back into the U.S.

According to the FBI, Coleman, a married surf school owner, had gotten caught up in QAnon conspiracies and believed his wife had passed her “serpent DNA” onto their children and thought they were going to grow into monsters. Killing them, FBI special agent Jennifer Bannon wrote in the criminal complaint, was his only option.

“He’s really despondent and hopeless,” a friend told People of a handwritten letter Coleman sent from prison. “He’s alone with his thoughts 24/7. He’s reflecting on the mistakes he made in life and wondering if there’s any chance for redemption.”

Coleman has pleaded not guilty to the charges. If convicted, he faces the death penalty.

“He poured out his heart,” his letter read. “He begged for forgiveness, but says that he’s now where he deserves to be.”

After Coleman vanished with Kaleo and Roxy, his wife contacted Santa Barbara police and filed a formal police report the next day. Using his Find My iPhone feature, she was able to track them to Rosarito, Mexico, according to the Department of Justice.

A farmworker found the children’s bodies nearby. Both had been stabbed in the chest repeatedly.

Georgia debunks Trump claim that 5,000 dead people voted in 2020
    Martin Pengelly

Donald Trump has claimed 5,000 dead people voted in 2020 in Georgia, a key state he lost to Joe Biden on his way to national defeat.

    He was off by 4,996.

As the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported on Monday, state officials have confirmed four cases of dead people voting.

All involved family members submitting votes for the deceased, cases in which the state has the power to levy fines.

In one case detailed by the paper, a widow submitted an absentee ballot for her husband after he died in September, two months before polling day.

An attorney for the 74-year-old woman reportedly told officials her husband “was going to vote Republican, and she said, ‘Well, I’m going to cancel your ballot because I’m voting Democrat.’ It was kind of a joke between them. She received the absentee ballot and carried out his wishes.

“She now realises that was not the thing to do.”

Even if Trump’s claim about dead voters were true, it would not have saved him from being the first Republican to lose Georgia since 1992. Biden won the state by nearly 12,000 votes. Nor could Georgia alone have overturned Trump’s electoral college defeat, by 306-232.

But Trump included his claim in a notorious call in which he pushed the Georgia secretary of state, Republican Brad Raffensperger, to “find” enough votes to give him victory.

“Dead people,” Trump said. “So dead people voted, and I think the number is close to 5,000 people. And they went to obituaries. They went to all sorts of methods to come up with an accurate number, and a minimum is close to about 5,000 voters.”

He also claimed that “a tremendous number of dead people” voted in Michigan, adding: “I think it was … 18,000. Some unbelievably high number, much higher than yours, you were in the 4-5,000 category.”

Referring to a claim of “upward of 5,000” dead voters he said was presented to Georgia officials, Raffensperger, said: “The actual number were two. Two. Two people that were dead that voted. So that’s wrong.”

Trump insisted: “In one state, we have a tremendous amount of dead people. So I don’t know – I’m sure we do in Georgia, too. I’m sure we do in Georgia, too.”

Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, told Raffensperger: “You say they were only two dead people who would vote. I can promise you there are more than that.”

Raffensperger refused to help Trump, prompting threats to his safety. But the call also placed Trump in legal jeopardy, as a district attorney investigates whether he broke electoral law.

The call was part of scattershot attempts to overturn a defeat Trump insists in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary was the result of electoral fraud.

A few days after the call, on 6 January, Trump told supporters in Washington to “fight like hell” in his cause. Rioters then attacked the US Capitol, seeking to stop certification of Biden’s win, in some cases seeking to capture or kill officials including Trump’s vice-president, Mike Pence.

    Five people died.
