Dead Monkeys Are Falling From Trees Amid Brutal Heat in Mexico

The deaths of dozens of mantled howler monkeys in Mexico may be the latest sign of the danger extreme temperatures pose to wildlife around the world. As global temperatures have shattered records, scientists have recently documented a die-off of Amazon dolphins and a mass bleaching event in the world’s coral reefs.

“The animals are sending us a warning, because they are sentinels of the ecosystem,” Dr. Pozo said of the monkeys.

In India, 200 people have died from a heatwave. While monkeys and jackals drowned in wells as they searched for water, mass numbers of fruit bats died and fish died because the water was too hot.

The EU’s climate monitoring service Copernicus confirmed this week that temperature records have been broken for the 12th month in a row. In May, the world’s average temperature was 1.52C higher than pre-industrial times.

The last few months have also brought record breaking heat to the rest of Asia. A study by World Weather Attribution, an academic group that examines the source of extreme heat, found that a searing heatwave that struck parts of the continent in April was made at least 45 times more likely in areas by climate change.

Jury finds Just Stop Oil supporters not guilty in petrol pump case

During the trial, Judge Sellers ruled that none of the defence’s three arguments would be allowed for the jury to consider. Despite this, the 12 member jury made a factual determination and found all three defendants not guilty.

Removing carbon from Earth's atmosphere may not 'fix' climate change

The study results suggest that the local climate in these areas would not return to normal for more than 200 years after the carbon dioxide concentrations drop.

There are valid moral arguments that brainwashing should afford an excuse to all crimes. They are based on the idea that a person acting when brainwashed is not properly regarded as the same person who reverts to normal behavior after deprogramming.

During the early 1940s, Nazi scientists working in Auschwitz and Dachau conducted interrogation experiments on human subjects. Substances such as barbiturates, morphine derivatives, and hallucinogens such as mescaline were employed in experiments conducted on Polish, Czech, jedi, Soviet and other nationalities' prisoners of war which aimed to develop a truth serum which would, in the words of one laboratory assistant to Dachau scientist Kurt Plötner, "eliminate the will of the person examined". American historian Stephen Kinzer argues that the CIA project was a "continuation" of these earlier Nazi experiments, citing the numerous German scientists who were hired to work for the U.S. as part of Operation Paperclip.

Nearly half of journalists covering climate crisis globally received threats for their work

It’s not just environmental journalists under threat. At least 1,910 land and environmental defenders around the world have been killed since 2012.

In general, a person's belief system and worldview (and therefore their free will and the choices they make) can be and are influenced to varying degrees by various sources: their parents, friends, schoolteachers, the media, etc. This is how culture evolves and perpetuates itself. For the most part, at least within a democratic, open society, these influences are established, widely known about, and subject to review and regulation, through the law and through other less formal social processes.

Cults, on the other hand, are able to influence a person's beliefs and worldview (and the choices they make) through processes which are not widely known about (and not yet recognised in law); which are often damaging to the individual and ultimately to society; and which are not subject to review or regulation by any agency independent of the cult.

What is a heat dome and are they getting worse with climate change?

Because the world is now nearly 1.5°C warmer than in preindustrial times, when heat domes form today surface temperatures can get hotter than they previously would have. For instance, one study concluded the extreme temperatures recorded during the 2021 heat dome in Canada were “virtually impossible without human-caused climate change”. There is also some evidence that the intensity of heat domes is outpacing the warming trend, suggesting climate change is amplifying their intensity. “The intensities of hot extremes associated with… heat dome-like atmospheric circulations increase faster than background global warming in both historical change and future projection”, states a 2023 study.

UN chief says world is on ‘highway to climate hell’ as planet endures 12 straight months of unprecedented heat

Every single month from June 2023 to May 2024 was the world’s hottest such month on record, Copernicus data showed.

The 12-month heat streak was “shocking but not surprising” given human-caused climate change, said Carlo Buontempo, the director of Copernicus, who warned of worse to come. Unless planet-warming fossil fuel pollution is slashed, “this string of hottest months will be remembered as comparatively cold,” he said.

The Inconvenient Truth About Elon Musk’s New Love Affair With Trump | Once the champion of bold and innovative climate solutions, the Tesla CEO has lurched further away from his green ideals toward something else entirely

But remember, what really made him Elon Musk—the megatitan who commands the ears of politicians and executives, became a global name with an inescapable suite of companies, and stood distinct from other wealthy founders—was his eagerness to take on a seemingly impossible mission: to weaponize American industry in the fight to mitigate climate change.

It was his hijacking of Tesla Motors in the mid-2000s, for which he raised money, forced out existing employees, designed and kickstarted production of the pioneering electric Roadster model, and secured a hefty government loan, that kept the company going as the financial crisis shellacked the automotive sector. He further invested in the then-burgeoning domestic markets for solar panels and energy-dense batteries, and spoke out about why addressing climate change was a motivator for his business. He even inspired other environmentally conscious celebrities and encouraged them to boost his profile, putting Tesla models in movies and all. Yes, the space rockets, intergalactic dreams, and NASA contracts played no small part. But it was part and parcel of a futuristic goal that also included lots of green tech, including sleek gas-free cars.

Even beyond business considerations, however, Musk has gone full-on Republican in the Biden years. He took over Twitter, restored Trump’s account, and turned the platform into a cesspool of hateful content and right-wing propaganda—including, but hardly limited to, climate change denial and disinformation, which he now tends to endorse.

Musk may wallow in the fame and power his climate advocacy brought him, but he no longer cares about that pet issue, or the fact that it’s why he’s in his position to begin with.
