Flush those with bleach water. Also wipe down all food prep surfaces with hot water, bleach, and a clean rag daily. If you do have to make that hard choice just be strong and be there for him at the end. Everyone is different and deals with loss differently.
My boy was a peace keeper his entire life. He would not let anyone harm anyone or anything. I have found a great deal of closure and comfort by planting a new olive tree at his grave.
We buried him right by where we sit on the porch and even laid some sod so he has a cool grassy spot in the desert. The effort, time, and thought put into constructing his grave was a big help in deali g with the grief.
