look at places of worship of the past and their workmanship.
those were made by volunteer peasants and look at recorded duration of their construction. without artificial lighting those work can only be done during the day and only limited works during the night and yet they manage to complete such task which will take modern day "american" workforce twice as long to complete even with modern, contemporary technology.
religion is usually the best indicator of a society's free time to pursue and engage in non-subsistence activities, and societies of the past have plenty of time for that.
