I'm just saying the types of jobs Issue mentioned aren't common and require special skills, training and/or certification.
I'd recommend trying a bunch of different things and seeing what you're most comfortable with or interested in - try and learn a programming language to see if you'd be interested in being a developer, set up a home network and configure firewalls/NAT/vlan etc. to see if you'd be interested in sysadmin work -

How many jobs are there for that sort of thing? It's all good and well if you want to learn or contribute to OSS but he specifically said he wanted to get into the IT industry. I'd expect specialist jobs like that would require a comp sci degree as well.
Also, you'd likely need to get into crypto as well which is complicated and requires a solid foundation in mathematics -
