I remember years ago MS wanted to punish Asian markets for using pirated copies of Windows so they added a countdown and fucked up display settings and stuff if you didn't buy a license (was probably the precursor to the current activation scheme). They didn't take into account how prohibitively expensive licenses were for those markets, so major businesses started looking at options for moving to lunix or another open source OS and Microsoft backpedaled hard before it could turn into a trend
