The Intelligence Service of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced that it had foiled an “Israeli-Arabic” plot to assassinate Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the commander of the Qods Force of the IRGC. According to Hojjatoleslam Hossein Taeb, the assassination squad bought a house next to the shrine of Gen. Soleimani’s father, prepared 350-500kg of explosives and planted them in a tunnel under the shrine. The squad planned to carry out the attack on September 8 or 9, which are the 9th and 10th days of the holy Islamic month of Muharram. Gen. Soleimani was supposed to visit his father shrine on one of these days. The IRGC arrested the entire squad consisting of 3 operatives.

First time I've heard of Soleimani being targeted in such a way. I suspect war will be coming soon, as the goal here was likely to surprise and weaken the IRGC.

    Aldra,
What do you think about the US pulling out of Syria? It was a total shock to most here.

From what i've heard they're not committing to a full withdrawal of US personnel, they're just getting rid of some troops to make way for Turkey to come in. In the greater geo-political sense it serves to drive Turkey and Russia apart and the US is happy to sacrifice the Kurds to accomplish that goal.

That’s the problem. The Kurds have been our allies, and we’re leaving them to get slaughtered.

The sooner the better for most involved, Trump tried to do it once before but he got stopped.

It's currently a sticky situation thanks to Turkey though - keep in mind that over 80% of the so-called SDF is YPG/PKK, foreign Kurds that the US brought in. The locals typically want to fall in with the Syrian Government, but once the US withdraws what happens to the fighting force? Do they dissipate and leave, or do they fight Turkey on their own initiative? What happens to the locals (who aren't even majority Kurdish), being stuck between the YPG and Turkish military?

Turkey wants to annex a chunk of northern Syria and the SAA won't simply let that happen. Will this lead to a wider war between Turkey and Syria? I doubt it, I think Erdogan is going to push hard and grab what he can because he knows Hezbullah is much of the muscle in Syria at the moment, and if (when) war with israel comes, Turkey will be a major ally to the Iranian side.

As I have stated strongly before, and just to reiterate, if Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!). They must, with Europe and others, watch over…

….the captured ISIS fighters and families. The U.S. has done far more than anyone could have ever expected, including the capture of 100% of the ISIS Caliphate. It is time now for others in the region, some of great wealth, to protect their own territory. THE USA IS GREAT!

    What a stable fucking genius

It's kinda stupid to think turkey wouldn't want to spring onto northern syria and take kobani and other parts of royavo just to fuck with the kurds and destabilize them.

In the interests of US foreign policy, it's in their best interests to have influence among the kurds and stupid to leave them stranded but that's what Putin wanted I guess

interesting prediction. Turkey wants a 30km 'buffer zone' inside Syria, where they're likely to push out and evict the local populations (850,000 people, significant numbers of Kurds) in order to create space for the Syrian 'refugees' (largely anti-government fighters and their families who fled the approach of the SAA) inside Turkey to be relocated. This would give Turkey a large degree of control over local politics without going through the hassle of militarily annexing the area.

Trump is taking a lot of shit from both sides for this move. One of his biggest allies, lyndsey graham, compared him to Obama on Fox News this morning.😂

It’s like he can’t keep any of his other campaign promises, so this is the one thing he can do. Hurr durr, “I’ll bring the soldiers home”.

Yeah, considering how hard the media has been pushing BIG BAD ASSAD it would always be tough to withdraw the military, but doing it now also makes him look like Erdogan the watermelon seller's bitch.

Turkey has very serious legitimate security concerns in having the YPG (PKK in all but name) right there on their border; it was never a sustainable situation. There are a hundred better ways this could have been done.

doing so could mean losing the ticket to join EU.

    not sure if serious

Turkey was never going to get into the EU and Erdogan knows it; suggesting that it was possible was just a way for them to control Turkey's behaviour. Turkey controlling the refugee floodgates is just a way for them to force the EU into favourable deals; I'm sure they all know know they were never actually getting in.

honestly in the last few days there have been like 5 different instances where people posted Trump quotes and I was sure they were exaggerating or adding in bits and pieces to make them sound more ridiculous, but turned out to be verbatim things he said on twitter or on video.

he does appear to be losing it

its not up just to EU to decide whos getting into it. US does have a say over whos getting in and whos not.

    or did.

    oh boy

The vessel, operated by the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), has been sailing through the Red Sea when the explosion occurred, according to Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency. The blast was powerful enough to damage two of its reservoirs, leading to an oil spill in the area.
