When I tell my son to pick up after himself and he says no, then I pull out my belt and tell him one more time. There's no reward like that for being responsible for your own mess. I do tell him thank you and let him know that I appreciate his help. Sometimes, if he doesn't bitch and whine about it, maybe I'll get him an ice cream or some other goodie snack or cheap toy, but that reward is for doing what he's told without resistance.
