Before WWII Nazi uh excitement, Germans had a great sense of nationalism (and during the war especially) so right around when you have Wagner's Die Ring/Saga of the Volsungen /Viking Opera in the 19th century.
That's where a lot of the Viking esque/Germanic art came in. Between conversion in 1200 and 1840 Christianity almost entirely erased it but the revivalist movement is very much alive. -

Also the Norrena Society (spelling?) Released the Asatru Edda a really well done chronological order of the lore. I highly disrecommend getting the Odinist Edda also by NS, because it's too Alglicized and made for prisoners with limited athletic abilities. -
