Probably the only time I'm going to say this: you are absolutely correct for once on that matter and that is absolutely my understanding of it as well.
The way most people at least in the United States can write up contracts they can write them in such a fashion where the person that is knowledgeable on writing the contracts and typically the one writing the contracts is the one that has the majority of the power if the other person backs out of the contract and the slightest way they will not be paid because the contract won't be fulfilled and allowed they may not be able to use the material for marketing and business purposes and like release it and publish it they would be able to obviously retain a copy of it for their own purposes -
