I just did a hop off on a plane heading for LA I got from NYC so I could stay a few nights. the main strip I stayed on (The Tropicana that just closed down) was a really cool hotel. sad to see it has to go but that strip is several miles long of well lit giant ad like time square has. and people just walking around drunk and either acting wild or just in a daze like bugs to a light. if you can maneuver around that, you can find specials on meals and shows and such. I never got one of those cards they offer where if can maintain a low lost/win ratio on nickel slots, you can score free rooms and tickets to shows. I'v yet to try it but that seems to be one of the tricks of getting a free night added to 2 nights you stay. you can always use it later on.
