Communists didn't want to "turn countries into communist countries" - communists simply saw the plight of the working class abroad and sought to free them from the shackles of capital. The fact that communism would have been the end result of that was more incidental than anything. Communists are like Christian missionaries. They want to save the immortal souls of the people they evangelize to, the fact that this necessitates converting to Christianity is incidental.

I will say upfront I'm not as much of a climate change/global warming skeptic as Speedy, but can someone explain to me why this Time article is referencing a 2.7°F cooling trend that occurred from "the 1940s" to the time it was written, and why a 0.38°C (0.68°F, if my math serves) increase over a similar span of time afterward (1981 to 2010) is alarming? Sounds like the warming trend over the last 40 years hasn't even accounted for 1/3rd of the cooling that occurred over the 40 years that immediately preceded it. 🤔

Also while the kid had a rifle on display, he also had a first aid kit over his other shoulder. I think if we're going to vilify him for open carry, we need to at least praise him equally as a hero for bringing a first aid kit to help people. In fact, I think the presence of a first aid kit makes it pretty fucking stupid to act like his intentions were just to "agitate" and "start shit". I don't think he went there looking for a confrontation, so much as he went there commendably prepared for one.

Maybe. Ideally you'll live, but getting your skull caved in by a BFI with a hockey stick isn't exactly safe and survival is not a guarantee. People have been killed by single punches, let alone all the people throughout history who have been clubbed to death with sticks. Given the choice between rolling those dice and killing the piece of shit trying to attack me, I'm taking the second option every time and there is nothing immoral about that.
Don't want to get slotted? Don't attack people. What's insane is that there are places in this world where folks are just expected to get their asses beat to their attackers' hearts content with no recourse to self-defense because they are weaker or outnumbered.
