Honestly cutting Google out of your life is probably a good move. I've been moving more towards eliminating or making redundant third party services in my life. Hardware doesn't bother me so much as long as I have some reasonable degree of control over it, it's more about bringing content hosting onto infrastructure I either physically control or can trivially move to a different provider (e.g. commodity hosting).

I can respect that. I've considered cutting out google in the past for privacy reasons I guess... I don't like the absurd amount of data they probably have on me (and have probably already sold to advertisers thousands of times). It does seem like a huge inconvenience for me though, for what is ultimately little reward. That said, I'm still not going to take part in some ineffectual boycott of google over some stupid ass political shit. -

I'll just stop using my gmail account, go break my android phone, uninstall Chrome, never use the google search engine again, never watch another video on YouTube, and more or less completely sever myself from the rest of humanity in the process. All because I disagree with their politics.
That sounds like a measured and reasonable course of action that will have a meaningful effect on the world, and definitely not at all like something a wildly mentally ill person would do. -

What constitutes needy? If you could conceivably buy groceries, but doing so would leave you with no money to play with... I'd say you're in need.

That system only works if people can enjoy their 8 for play. Expecting low income people to starve spiritually/mentally is almost as cruel as expecting them to starve literally.
It maybe not occupy the same tier on mazlow's hierarchy of needs, but it is still a need. -

lol for all the animosity between us, PHM is right about food banks and stuff. Why spend that money on food if your income is low enough that you can rely on social safety nets? It's pretty much the only way a poor person can have a life beyond the joyless grind of eating, sleeping, commuting, and working. If you can avoid spending all your money on necessities so you can actually enjoy your life... more power to you. -
