   works on the same basis as binaural beats, basically if you have beats of two different frequencies your brain creates a 'phantom' beat that's the difference between the two.
   
   so if you have one beat at 10hz in one ear and one at 30hz in the other, you hear a weird warbling beat at 20hz that doesn't actually exist.
   
   because your brain 'creates' it it has the effect of tuning your brain's frequency, in this case raising or lowering it gradually.
   
   so yeah with stuff like idoser they vary frequencies which can cause weird mental effects but calling it stuff like MDMA or cocaine is just marketing
