2024-05-10 at 1:23 AM UTC in Are you looking forward to the big war with Iran?that's the point, offensive weapons always advance faster than defensive ones so a single $10 billion ship is a huge liability. they're primarily for bullying countries that have no way to fight back. a peer or near peer is going to be able to saturate AA/AD (using hypersonics and/or modern ASBMs) and kill the carrier for a fraction of its cost.
I suspect China is building them primarily as a symbol of prestige to show that they're part of the Big Boys Club rather than any practical purpose. -

vtol and stovl are vertical and near-vertical takeoff and landing where the plane's jets actually rotate, but they're extremely overengineered and prone to failure. relatively few jets use the system because they're so expensive and problematic. you wouldn't want your whole air wing in that configuration.
older carriers have a ramp at the end of the runway so that planes can get enough altitude to not just fall into the ocean.
newer carriers use a hydraulic catapult, like a slingshot that increases the speed of the jet taking off so that it can do so from a shorter runway and without a ramp to give it lift. runways can be shorter and more compact but again it adds more points of failure -

the eSafety commission in Australia tried to force twitter to take the post down (the guy sharing it, not the actual Daily Mail article), fining them $700,000 a day for each day it remained up, last I heard twitter hid the post pending legal investigation -
