there's not much really solid information on this especially considering how many different types of nuclear weapons there are with different levels of radiation persistence.
generally speaking though the most dangerous radioactive materials are particles, not the waves themselves, and they land on the ground if you're outside the immediate danger zone. assuming society's still in such a state that it's possible, you can reduce the intensity and lifespan of dangerous radiation by like 80% just by turning the top soil, but that'd require either machinery or a large group of workers (ideally with NBC protection) working over a wide area. -
